Mothers and babies

Anywhere up to 80% of pregnant women will experience back pain!

Back pain during pregnancy is a common consequence of carrying a baby. Various skeletal changes develop during your term - usually the worst pain being experienced in the last trimester.  Ligaments, muscles, tendons and joints all have an extra load placed upon them that may be even worse if you had a pre-existing back problem.

You may be experiencing pain in the following areas:  Lower back, sacro-iliac joints, groin area, pubic bone, coccyx (tailbone).

In addition, a small percentage of women will experience sciatica - either with or without back pain. Sciatica can cause pain and tingling down the leg and thigh. The leg may also feel weak - as if it is about to give way. This is NOT due to the baby pressing on the nerve, as is often assumed.

Another problem you may experience during pregnancy is Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction or SPD.

If you have pain low down at the front (in the pubic area) you probably have this condition. The pubic bones are joined together at the front by fibrocartilage. In pregnancy, when the joints are softened to ease the passage of the baby through the birth canal, this joint becomes unstable. When this softening and relaxation of the joints occurs there may be instability in the pelvis - creating stretch or pressure on the pubic joint.

This can result in pain on the inside of the thighs and also a clicking of the joint may be sometimes felt. SPD can be experienced in the first trimester or after delivery. If you had SPD in your first pregnancy it is possible you will experience it in subsequent pregnancies.

POSTPARTUM BACK PAIN

Giving birth is a wonderous experience but it imposes a huge strain on your body. The forces exerted during childbirth can easily push structures to their limit - and beyond.

Misalignments of vertebral bodies can cause distressing pain after giving birth. It is not uncommon to have coccyx, sacral or lumbar pain after giving birth. Many muscular structures are strained or go into spasm. These spasm interfere with normal, everyday movements of the body like walking or climbing stairs.

Left untreated this pain can continue for years. It is not uncommon for women to state that their current back pain problems started after giving birth perhaps ten, twenty or more years ago.

Bowen Therapy is a gentle and effective way to address these types of pain.

CASE STUDY

Very recently a woman presented with back pain she had been experiencing for FORTY YEARS - since giving birth to her son.  She was almost dumbstruck when in just a single treatment Bowen Therapy resolved the problem. She was overjoyed!

Bowen should be available to ALL women after giving birth so that her body structures can be realigned and pain eliminated. Upon the arrival of a new baby the last thing you need is back pain!

CASE STUDY

After giving birth to her first baby a young woman experienced excruciating pain in her tailbone and lumbar spine.  Painkillers were of no use and, as she was breast-feeding, she didn't want drugs going into her body. One gentle treatment reduced the pain by 50% and a second treatment left her pain-free. A year later she is still pain free with no further treatments being necessary.

BOWEN IS SUITABLE FOR BABIES TOO!

Sometimes your baby may have problems with digestion after a feed, may have tummy cramps and their bowel movements may be difficult or infrequent. They may have sinus congestion and runny, watery eyes. Or they may generally just feel unsettled.

Bowen can work well for these type of problems.

Infants and toddlers can also benefit if they have respiratory problems often diagnosed as asthma, or restricted breathing.

Bowen is very gentle and will not cause the pregnant mum or your baby or infant any harm or distress.

For maximum comfort, pregnant mums are treated laying on their side. No uncomfortable or excessive force or manipulation is ever applied. Most women are usually totally relaxed.

If you're a woman reading this who has had back pain since giving birth then Bowen Therapy is the ideal choice of treatment.
